	What are dental implants?
	A dental implant is a titanium rod, which is placed directly into the jawbone to act as an anchor to support one or more false teeth.


	The advantages of Implants?
	Replacement teeth secured or stabilised by implants are more comfortable than conventional dentures, as there is no movement Implants are the alternative to bridgework for permanently replacing missing teeth, so there is no need to grind down healthy teeth When the tooth is missing, the surrounding bone begins to shrink. Implants maintain the shape and structure of the bone.

	Who can have implants?
	Anyone with missing teeth should consider implants as long as they are over 18. Your dentist will refer you to see the implantologist, to see if your case is suitable.

	What does the treatment involve?
	Initial Assessment – Alternatives will be discussed, Feasibility will be assessed, x-rays are often taken and preliminary models may be prepared Implant Placement – The treatment requires a small operation, which can be carried out under local anaesthetic with sedation (if required) for your comfort. Sometimes bone regeneration is required prior to implant placement. Integration Period – A simple adhesive bridge is worn for a period of 3 months to allow the implant to fully integrate before loading The restorative phase – Once the implant is ready the permanent replacement is fitted (ranging from a single crown, bridge, removable denture), Maintenance – The patient will need to clean thoroughly around the implant, and should visit their dentist for regular checks.
